The office and the public record.

The Attorney General’s work includes enforcing laws and managing a department entrusted with sensitive information. Evaluating that record means examining decisions, findings and outcomes.

This site brings together selected source-linked accounts, with relevant responses and clear limits on what the evidence establishes.

What do the records actually establish?

Department failures

The DOJ investigation identifies failures in training, procedures and oversight. It also finds the exposure unintentional. Both conclusions belong in the account, alongside Bonta’s apology and the department’s proposed reforms.

How the dashboard exposed personal data

Awarded, paid and recovered

The Viridis grant award and reported spending describe different amounts at different stages. An award record cannot tell readers how much was ultimately paid, returned or recovered. The project’s payment and closeout records remain necessary.

Oversight after the controversy

The 2023 budget account includes the original assignment, Mia Bonta’s recusal and the transfer of DOJ hearings to another panel. The Assembly’s report documents where those hearings were subsequently assigned.

What the reassignment changed

Payments and their purpose

A campaign payment identifies a payee and reported expense. A charitable transfer is a separate transaction. Neither establishes, on its own, how money was ultimately used or whether a donor influenced an official decision.
